Reflection – Week 2

This week we thought about Auteur Theory as well as a script’s purpose – creation or blueprint? The script can encompass both creativity and structure, a true scriptwriter is an architect of both imagination and logistics. In this sense the screenwriter is quite amazing and should get more credit than they get (more often than not).

“Unfortunately, the screenwriter, more often than not, must fight for their place on a film set, as they are often unwanted. There can be a fear that screenwriters will interfere and dictate how the film should be made” Shrader

Many scriptwriters become directors and vice versa, possibly so as to retain more control over the piece of work. I definitely enjoy both roles, although I am happy to take either depending on the project as I enjoy working in a team. Unless it’s a project really close to my heart, in which case I can understand the wanting autonomy over the script.

There are so many different aspects and you all have to work together to create something amazing. This is a writing course though and a chance to focus on the scriptwriting aspect. I’ve been contemplating changing my concept from a mental health focused video game to a contemporary short film (I had the idea for whilst learning first aid). I believe the short film will give me a lot more chances to experiment with dialogue and although this is my weakest area, it is the area I wish to improve in most so I shall tackle it head on!
