The Ideal Idea

Having changed my idea, this week’s reading was very poignant for me. ‘Ideas’ by Mukherjee was full of great pointers for whether my new idea would work or not. It made me panic in some places due to it being a new idea and not as fleshed out as my first idea.

“It is the richness of depth that makes an idea rock, not the tidiness of its articulation”

Throughout the reading I added to my idea’s depth and tried to think of different layers that the viewer could read into. My idea rose from real life observation and may even be a little too current, but i feel we’re in a really interesting crossroads of human history at the moment and I want to dissect some of the attitudes and beliefs people have. I’m hoping to create something which embodies a central theme of polarised viewpoints and opinions in a time when nobody truly knows or understands what they are fighting for.

“Tingle of engagement entertainment and the promise of something profound”

When I first thought of the new concept even as I wrote down the premise I was imagining different characters and the dialogue that could be used and my friends I’ve told my idea to think it’s great and more poignant to our current circumstances than my original idea.

Although I am endlessly in a state of indecision and another friend has said she prefers my first idea so I’m going to have some decision making to do soon! The main difference will be that the new idea will be more dialogue focused and that’s what I need to work on so it makes sense to try that. I’m going to use Mukherjee’s tip to make sure the dialogue is not a back and forth question and answer deal and maybe try it out with other people reading to see how it works.

The good thing about the second concept is that I won’t risk getting locked into fixed particulars at too early a stage. With the other character I was loosely basing her on myself which I think makes it more difficult to take other people’s suggestions and  makes for a lot of hard work! My new protagonist is going to be loosely based on a mixture of all of the key workers I know.
