This is the first in a series of new additions I’ve been working on. I’ve got more television and film analysis, tons of updates from the projects I’ve been working on, and a new series of tutorials planned! It’s taken me a while to set this up again as it’s been an action-packed year of commissioned writing and script editing, plus performing and teaching.
The year began with preparations for two Fringe Festival shows and the Fun And Laughter Mob’s Dances With Seagulls, my theatre-based directorial debut in April. I was commissioned to write Emotions In Motion – How Circus Saved My Life for the wonderful Arcanic (CIC) and it was performed by fantastic professionals at the Brighton Fringe Festival in May and June. I also performed in the Fringe Festival myself with the FALM for the comedic variety dance show Marvin And The Dodgyspinners.
We’ve just wrapped on Asking 4 It, the dark comedy short that considers issues of consent. It was an exciting opportunity to work on set again after directing/producing my own short film in 2022, The Year Dot. From the moment I read Emma Jesse’s script, I knew I wanted to be part of the production. I related to Jesse’s vision, driving passion, and later on, the difficulties of budgeting constraints whilst bringing something creative that matters to people into the public domain.
On the set I was able to network and connect with lots of amazing creatives, as well as working with some wonderful people I brought on board. Everyone who attended brought their passion, dedication, and creativity to the shoot. I can’t wait to see how it turns out after post-production!
I have my second draft of Somewhen BCE ready, and to elevate it to the next level, I did the only sensible thing and tore the half hour episode down to its bare bones, split the story into a two-part pilot and shall now need to rebuild both episodes!
I started this re-structure as a natural evolution of my further understanding of my own characters and arena. This is usually a frustrating process, but I am grateful to be lucky enough to have done this while travelling in Europe, along the Adriatic coastline. A similar route to the one I plan my characters to take.
It’s always great to practice your craft and I attend a screenwriters group where we read through and give feedback on each other’s scripts. Some friends from Falmouth University and myself have formed a script feedback group called the Shark Tank with talks of rolling it out to the public in the future.
And feedback, plus setting up my script editing services has led to being asked by Leo of Whisky Dog Productions to help him develop Christian Hearn‘s feature script for Romanticide into a mini-series and come on as a Showrunner.
