The Synopsis outlines the spine of the story, detailing central characters, arena, principal events, climax and conclusion. It should be written in an objective, economical style and direct itself to an account of the story only: the Synopsis should exclude comment of any kind.
The Analysis will identify and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the designated screenplay. This section of the script reader’s report should contain a series of clear points designed to enable a decision to be made on any further development of the project. The screenplay’s potential should be assessed, together with a conclusion suggesting whether the work should be recommended for further consideration or rejected.
The Notes should constructively address the problems of the screenplay from an editorial point of view, with the intention of providing a set of suggested revisions for the next draft in terms of structure, characterisation, arena, dialogue, execution and other relevant aspects. An agenda of proposed changes is therefore required, delineated in detail, with specific references to scenes and sections of text. The notes should be remedial and clear-cut, not generalised critique, and written in a clear, concise style.
What makes you qualified to write the story, why should you write it, and why now?
Over lockdown we all experienced many different thoughts and feelings and upheaval. We had to adjust to a new way of life. This is my way of exploring some of those themes. As a (non school-based) teacher I believe I have some idea of the type of person Kath is and wanted to make a comment on how much we under-value teachers and educators in our society. I also lived in the same area as I’ve set the piece, so I understand the characters and location.
Should a screenwriter incorporate other media into their pitch?
I believe that a pitch should reflect the project and the auteur, so it should be decided based upon the project which materials to use in the pitch.
What tools could a writer use to accomplish their pitch?
There are many tools and ways to pitch an idea, I would suggest going with something you feel confident with, so if you like photography or drawing then photographs and sketches could help to illustrate your point. If you love music you could bring a piece of music that emotes your idea. The best thing is to be prepared and know your characters and narrative inside out.
